AI SEO, also called Generative Engine Optimization or GEO, is the practice of structuring website content so AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity cite your brand inside their answers. It combines traditional SEO fundamentals with AI crawler access, extractable content formats, schema markup and citation tracking. Indian brands typically see their first AI citations within 6 to 12 weeks.

A complete generative-search stack โ built to make your brand the answer AI tools give, and the link Google ranks.
What is AI SEO?
AI SEO is the practice of optimising content so large language models cite it when answering user questions. Traditional SEO aims to rank a page; AI SEO aims to make the page the source an AI tool quotes.
What is GEO and how is it different from AI SEO?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. In practice the two terms mean the same thing. GEO is the more technical term used in the industry; AI SEO is what most clients search for.
Is AI SEO different from AEO?
AEO โ Answer Engine Optimization โ originally described optimising for featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO extends that to generative AI answers. The tactics overlap heavily: direct answers, structured data, clean formatting.
Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?
No. Crawlability, page speed, authority and clean structure serve both. AI SEO adds a generative layer โ crawler access, extractable formats, citation tracking โ on top of solid SEO fundamentals.
Is AI SEO just a rebrand of what agencies already do?
Partly. About 60% of the work is good SEO done well. The other 40% is genuinely new: AI crawler management, llms.txt, prompt research, Bing-first indexation and measuring citations instead of rankings.
How do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity find content?
Two ways. Their crawlers index the open web, and their live search features pull results in real time โ Perplexity and Copilot lean heavily on Bing’s index, ChatGPT uses its own OAI-SearchBot plus Bing.
Which AI crawlers should I allow?
GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, ClaudeBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity, Google-Extended for Gemini. Allow all five in robots.txt unless you have a specific reason to block them.
Why does Bing matter so much for AI SEO?
Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot retrieve from Bing’s index. If you’re indexed in Google but not Bing, you’re invisible to a large share of AI search. Submitting to Bing Webmaster Tools is a same-day fix.
What is llms.txt and do I need it?
llms.txt is a plain-text file at your site root listing your most citable pages in markdown. Adoption is still early and no major AI tool officially requires it, but it costs an hour to add and does no harm.
Do AI tools use backlinks?
Indirectly. Backlinks build the domain authority that influences which sources get retrieved. But unlinked brand mentions on Reddit, Quora and forums appear to matter just as much for LLM training and retrieval.
What content format gets cited most?
Tables, numbered lists, direct definition sentences and Q&A blocks. Anything a model can lift cleanly without rewriting. Long unbroken paragraphs get cited least.
How long should an AI SEO page be?
Length matters less than density. A 1,200-word page packed with facts, tables and clear answers outperforms a 4,000-word page of padding. Aim for the shortest length that fully answers the question.
Should I add an FAQ section to every page?
To every commercial and informational page, yes. FAQ blocks are the single most extractable format and they carry FAQPage schema, which removes ambiguity for machines.
Does keyword density still matter?
Barely. Entity clarity matters more โ being unmistakably associated with your topic, location and category across your site, your Google Business Profile and third-party mentions.
Do AI tools prefer fresh content?
Yes, noticeably. Visible “last updated” dates plus an accurate dateModified in schema help. Refresh statistics and pricing every quarter on your priority pages.
Should I write content with AI?
You can draft with it, but publish only what you’ve fact-checked and added original data to. AI tools cite sources that contain information the model doesn’t already have โ generic AI-written content gives them nothing to cite.
What schema markup matters most for AI SEO?
Organization schema with sameAs links, FAQPage on every FAQ block, Article with author and dates, and LocalBusiness for Indian local brands. Validate with Google’s Rich Results Test.
Does site speed affect AI citations?
Indirectly but meaningfully. Slow, timing-out pages get crawled less. Meeting Core Web Vitals thresholds keeps crawlers coming back.
Will JavaScript hurt my AI visibility?
Yes, more than it hurts Google. Most AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript reliably. Server-render your important content or you may be invisible to them.
Is my site accidentally blocking AI crawlers?
Very likely. Cloudflare, Sucuri and several WordPress security plugins block AI bots by default. Check your robots.txt and your CDN bot-management rules โ this is the most common problem we find in audits.
Do I need a Wikidata entry?
It helps with entity recognition, especially for brands with common or ambiguous names. It’s free to create and takes about two hours. Worth doing once your brand has some third-party coverage.
How do I measure AI SEO success?
Three numbers: citation rate across a fixed prompt list, referral sessions from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai in GA4, and AI crawler hits in your server logs. Crawler hits move first, citations follow.
How do I track citations without paid tools?
Build a Google Sheet with 30โ50 buyer questions. Test each one monthly across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Log whether your brand appears. Two hours a month, zero cost.
Is AI referral traffic visible in GA4?
Yes. Filter referral sources for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai and copilot.microsoft.com. Volume is low compared to Google but conversion rates are usually higher โ these visitors arrive pre-qualified.
What’s a good citation rate?
For a niche B2B brand, appearing in 20โ30% of your target prompts within six months is strong. For a competitive consumer category, 10โ15% is realistic.
Why did my citations drop suddenly?
Usually a model update, a competitor publishing better structured content, or a technical change on your side โ a new CDN rule, a robots.txt edit, or a redesign that moved content into JavaScript.
How long does AI SEO take to work?
Most clients see first citations in 6 to 12 weeks. Technical fixes show up in crawler logs within days. Content restructuring takes 4โ8 weeks to affect retrieval.
How much does AI SEO cost in India?
Retainers typically run โน40,000 to โน2,50,000 per month depending on scope. A one-time audit runs around โน25,000. DIY costs nothing but roughly 30โ40 hours of your time.
Can I do AI SEO myself?
Yes, particularly the technical and schema work. The free tools โ Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Screaming Frog’s free tier, Rich Results Test, GA4 โ cover most of the checklist.
Is AI SEO worth it for a small business?
If your buyers research before purchasing, yes. Local service businesses in Bangalore are already getting leads from Perplexity and ChatGPT. If you sell purely on impulse or price, Google Ads is likely a faster return.
You can complete most of this checklist yourself. Here’s the honest breakdown of DIY versus done-for-you in the Indian market.

|---|---|---|---|
| DIY | Founders with time | Free tools + 30โ40 hrs of your work | โน0 + tools |
| Guided Audit | Teams who need direction | One-time audit, prioritised fixes, handoff doc | โน25,000 one-time |
| Done-For-You | Brands who need speed | Full GEO implementation + monthly citation tracking | โน45,000/mo onwards |
